The Streak Goes On.....(Review: 36ers vs Crocs 5/12/14)
Adelaide trotted out another starting group, one it had used earlier in the season. Wright opted for Wilson/Gibson/Creek/Petrie/Schenscher. When Joey called his first sub, Adelaide was down 9-5, making it 8 consecutive games that Adelaide's starters haven't built a lead by the first sub. The subs worked though and largely through the play of Brock Motum, Adelaide led 22-17 at the end of the first quarter.
A 5-0 run to start the second got that lead to 10 before the Crocs got into a groove. They outscored Adelaide 20-14 from there. Steindl was key, scoring 10 in that run from outside, mid-range and the free throw line.
Then it really went south.
After scoring 37 in the first half, the Crocs went on to score 35 in the third quarter. Luke Schenscher picked up his fourth foul early in the third and was forced to the bench. He never returned and Townsville outscored Adelaide 50-41 from there. The Sixers struggled to make stops, especially without Schensch to anchor the 3-2 zone which they'd had some success with. Offensively, the team had no real inside threat and Gladness was having a good game in any case protecting the paint. Outside, as has been well documented, the team stinks. It nailed four threes on seventeen attempts and three of those came late in the game when it was all too late.
There's little time for tinkering with another big game up tonight versus Cairns. The Taipans made Adelaide look very ordinary in the season opener and this game will be even tougher, on the road, on a back-to-back in the midst of a six game losing streak. Adelaide needs the following to be any chance of a win.
1/ Step up, Gibbo.
Gibbo averages 21.7 in wins, 11.1 in losses. He has to put the foot down. Wright needs to give him some minutes with Jamar on the pine and let him go to work. The team desperately needs his outside shooting and aggressive mindset.
2/ Step up, Schensch
Big Red averages 11 and 7 in wins, 6 and 4 in losses. He struggled against the league's best defensive big in Gladness last night, tonight he'll face off against Burston,Loughton and Trigger. That's easier. Get the skyhook ready, Luke!
3/ Adelaide Arena baskets aren't that friendly, Teysey?
Teys at home: 14pts / 55% fg / 47% 3pt / 95% ft
Teys away: 5pts / 28% fg / 9% 3pt / 55% ft
Teys has stepped up this year. Needs to do it on the road though too.
Adelaide is giving up way too many points. 98 a game since Brock arrived (it was 88 back in the DQ days). Must focus on keeping Cairns under 80 points. The rest should take care of itself.
