MELBOURNE 96, ADELAIDE 66
The new-look Tigers handed Adelaide a basketball lesson tonight, smashing the 36ers from pillar to post in a comprehensive 96-66 win.
Melbourne debuted import Jonny Flynn tonight and from the get-go it was clear he was looking to create for team mates. He got two assists early and set the tempo for the rest of the game. The Tigers players, feeding off Flynn's unselfish approach, continually made the extra pass, leading to plenty of open shots. Melbourne shot 49% for the game and if you take away Flynn's 17 shots, they hit 33/58 shots (57%). Adelaide on the other hand repeatedly shot early into the shot clock and rarely took good, open looks.
Flynn's debut was highly anticipated and he started the game well, despite struggling with his shot. He took a variety of inside jumpers, runners and layups but looked pretty out of sync. His influence on the game was unquestionable though and he helped build a strong lead that Adelaide was never going to peg back. Social media was abuzz during and after the game about Flynn's performance. Before we get too carried away lest we forget Myron Allen and his 13 points, 3 rebounds and 8 assists on debut.
It's back to the drawing board for Adelaide, who would have been feeling better about themselves after last week's road win. This was always going to be a tough game but to lose by 30 was unacceptable. Giving up 96 points and only scoring 66 shows the team has a long way to go. How far will be evident by about 3:30pm Sunday.
Gibson- 6pts (3/12), 2reb, 2 ast. Got into foul trouble early guarding Flynn which harmed his effectiveness. Adelaide needed more from him up against an elite point guard. Never got going and had another poor shooting night. 3/10
Weigh- 4pts (2/5), 4 reb, 0 ast. Team mates again failed to get him open looks. Clarke needs to get him more involved. 3/10
Cadee- 10pts (3/7), 1 reb, 2 ast. Did a few good things but hardly a memorable performance. 4/10
Massingale- 5pts (2/5), 4 reb, 1 ast. Looked a little better but does little outside shoot the basketball. 3.5/10
Schenscher- 4pts (1/8), 5reb, 2 ast. Struggled with Melbourne's physicality. A backwards step from his recent improved form. 3.5/10
Petrie- 15pts (6/11), 7pts, 1 ast. Probably our best for the night without dominating. 6.5/10
Vasiljevic- 0pts (0/2), 2 reb, 0 ast. Got 8 minutes but looked way out of his depth. Is the 10th man but with his experience and skills should be giving a little more than he his. A big downgrade from Helliwell. 0.5/10
Johnson- 12pts (4/8), 8pts, 1 ast. Rebounded well but had limited chances again on offense. Should have been a focal point on offense but instead was left to stand around a lot. Is Clarke running less stuff for him? 6/10
Creek- 5pts (2/3), 2 reb, 1 ast. Did well guarding Flynn but had little influence otherwise. 3/10
Crosswell- 5pts (1/3), 1 reb, 2 ast. Struggled to get into the game again. Needs a breakout game. 3/10
Tomlinson- 4pts (1/7), 1 reb, 2 ast. Shot poorly and had minimal influence. 3/10
Flynn- 12pts (4/17), 8 reb, 7 ast. Solid first up game but shot was off and was not as polished as I would have expected. Time will tell if that was just jetlag and lack of knowledge of the system. 7.5/10
Greer- 0pts (0.0), 1 reb, 1 ast. Yep. 1/10
Lewis- 6pts (2/7), 2 reb, 0 ast. Would have gained some confidence. Attacked on offense and got a nice block on Schensch. 3.5/10
Rush- 9pts (4/7), 4 reb, 1 ast. Played his role and was ok. 4.5/10
Scott- 18pts (8/11), 10 reb, 0 ast. Strong game. Hit his shots, rebounded and played his part. 7.5/10
Burston- 2pts (1/2), 5reb, 0 ast. Only played 12 minutes and did well when on. 3/10
Walker- 10pts (3/6), 4 reb, 1 ast. Great bench guy. Attacks the basket and can hit the 3. 5/10
Goulding- 24pts (9/12), 3 reb, 3 ast. Kind of similar to his last game vs Adelaide except his shots dropped and he played most of the game. Huge first half helped set up the win. 7.5/10
MacDonald- 0pts (0/1), 0 reb, 0 ast. Just glad to get some PT I'm guessing. Almost scored on a nice move. 0/0
Odigie- 2pts (1/1), 1 reb, 0 ast. He scored. Yay! 1/10
Ballinger- 9pts (4/4), 4 reb, 0 ast. Nice contribution from the bench in limited minutes. 5/10
