Jamar Wilson, Andrew Warren, Marty Clarke, Aaron Grabau and the magical 9 pointer

4th Quarter, 3:45 left
Jamar Wilson passes the ball to Andrew Warren standing on the left corner 3pt line.
Before we continue the story, here's a little background. Last time Cairns visited Adelaide 2 weeks ago, Andrew Warren drained 3 triples from the left corner 3pt line. His 4th quarter barrage ended up pretty much costing the 36ers the game. The 36ers weren't going to let him beat them again and did a great job on him, to this point holding him to 2pts. Let's continue the story.....

Andrew Warren takes a tough 3 with two Adelaide defenders launching at him. The shot goes down and a foul is called. The triple puts Cairns up 69-66. Clarke remonstrates with the ref about an earlier play and gets a warning. He keeps going and gets a tech. (***Correction: Later out we found out the tech was applied to Assistant Coach Mark Radford. Aplogies Marty!).  He then calls a timeout. Andrew Warren hits his "And 1", then Jamar Wilson drains both technicals. Cairns up 72-66. The Taipans inbound the ball, work it round, then find Aaron Grabau who hits an open 3. Cairns now up 75-66. Game over.

In all my years watching and playing basketball I've never seen the above occur. 4pt plays are rare enough but Clarke's Radford's  technical was idiotic to say the least as it was about something that had occurred earlier and the team needed to focus on the dagger they'd just been given. Wilson punished us by hitting his free throws and the team was clearly gutted. The Grabau 3 was the final kick in the guts.

Adelaide was up 24-12 after the 1st quarter and looked full of energy and enthusiasm. Cairns put the clamps on in the 2nd and found rhythm on offence, outscoring us 27-11 to go into the half up 38-35. The 3rd was an arm wrestle and after working themselves back into the game in the 4th the above was totally unacceptable.

Here's some random thoughts and comments.....................

Jamar Wilson- 25pts on 8-16 shooting, 4 assists, 4 turnovers
Chris Warren- 4pts on 1-8 shooting, 2 assists, 5 turnovers

Diamon Simpson- 10 and 7 in 18 minutes. Totally confused by the lack of minutes (besides the understandable rest for a stretch in the 1st-2nd quarter because of picking up 2 early fouls). I'd hope there's a good reason that we don't know about. Fans in my area were calling for him to come on in the 4th when he'd inexplicably been sitting for almost 8 minutes before coming back on when the game was over. Which leads me to my next point.....

Daniel Johnson. Got 13 and 9 in 32 minutes on 5/14 shooting. Tried to work inside on Crosswhite who is too cagey and strong for him. Should have worked him from the perimeter.  Stats were well and truly padded when the game was over (5pts, 2 rebounds in the last 2 minutes).

Player Ratings
Stephen Weigh- 21pts on 8/14 shooting, 2 threes, 4 rebounds, 5 turnovers. Our best offensive player and one of his better scoring games in a while. Took decent shots. Low rebound game and didn't do heaps else but not one to point the finger at. 7/10

Nathan Herbert- 7pts on 3/5 shooting, 2 rebounds, 1 steal. Hit a key 3 on the 3rd quarter buzzer plus hit a nice jumper and got an important steal in the 4th. Had his moments. 5.5/10

Tom Daly- 4pts on 1/1 shooting. 1 rebound. Only got 6 minutes but matched Chris Warren's scoring output. Shamed Warren by beautifully working Wilson all over the court on one play, exposing his footwork and hitting a nice little jumper. 3.5/10

Darren Ng- 3pts on 1/4 shooting. 3 rebounds, 2 turnovers. Hit a key three in the 4th but again exposed on D, Cairns outscoring us badly when he was on in the 2nd. If he's not scoring it hurts us bad. 3/10.

Wade Helliwell- 4pts on 1/3 shooting. 1 steal. Looked good and awful in equal amounts. Deserved more minutes in the 2nd half. 3/10

Chris Warren- 4pts on 1/8 shooting, 2 steals, 2 assists, 5 turnovers. Deplorable for 31 minutes of action. Awful on both ends, gave us nothing. The pressure is going to mount. 2/10

Daniel Johnson- 13pts on 5/14 shooting, 9 rebounds, 2 blocks. Got angry too late in the game. Needs to find some intensity early in the game. Schooled by Crosswhite. Numbers flattering. 6/10.

Mitch Creek- 2pts on 1/4 shooting, 5 rebounds, 2 assists. Looked good at the start of the game, doing lots of little things.  Played 5 of his 16 minutes in the 1st quarter, only got another 11 over the next 3. Being treated shabbily. It's very hard to get into the flow of a game when you only get spurts of 3-5 minutes. Deserves more minutes, especially at home. 4/10

Everard Bartlett- 7pts on 2/6 shooting, 2 rebounds, 3 turnovers. Some good moments tainted by some blunders. Probably deserves some spot minutes at PG, especially when Warren struggles like that. Tried hard. 4/10

Diamon Simpson- 10pts on 5/7 shooting, 7 rebounds, 1   block. Battled hard but looked a bit down today. Only got 18 minutes, again baffling the fans. 6/10

Marty Clarke- his tech pretty much cost us the game. The use of Simpson was again puzzling and his rotations weren't great. 3/10.

  1. That nine point possession was one of the strangest things I've seen in a game in a long time.

games like this when you get nothing from warren i'd like to see them try someone else at the point. they couldn't do any worse.

  2. Hate to say this.. but it wasn't actually Marty Clarke who got th tech Foul.. was actually the assistant couch!

  3. weather it was him or his short fat friend it doesnt really matter does it? bottom line is it came from the bench and it killed us!

  4. There's conflicting reports as to who it was, but he needs to control that bench regardless. That was the game changer.

  5. Apparently it was Radford, so apologies to Marty.
